In Space

lyrics

It might have been an April day, though I don’t trust my memory,
& I don’t daydream anymore. Dreaming is never enough.
We were wandering in the woods & were so lost for hours & hours.
I just lay there in the leaves like my head was full of flowers.
I was just a kid. I’d been floating through the trees
& all the always open doors. Nothing was always enough.
All around us, such a mess. We wanted so much; we were always so tired.
Our future lay there in the light, but it was set. It was already wired.

The peaceful look you’ve got upon your face.
We will not argue anymore
if you would just come back.
Retribution or attack,
this has got to be because of me.
All the while, you are lost in space.
Something that I’ve heard before
comes rushing back to mind.
Since you were always kind,
this has got to be because of me.

This is just a plea. I think you’ve heard it all before,
but I will call to you again, since nothing is never enough.
Going gently into night after a long institutional tedium.
You gave a tree the gift of sight; I gave my last 20 bucks to the medium.
It gets away from me. I’ll be forgiven for wanting more.
I’ll say repentant prayers and then nothing is almost enough.
Going big, then going out. You close your eyes for hours and hours.
Here comes the latest wave of doubt.

There's a peaceful look you’ve got upon your face.
We will not argue anymore
if you would just come back.
Retribution or attack,
this has got to be because of me.
“All the while, you are lost in space”:
something that I’ve heard before.
